"You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar," was a quote often repeated by my mother. Training dogs with positive reinforcement methods uses the same type of wisdom. Dogs learn faster and are motivated by positive rewards or feedback for performing the desired behavior.
I love seeing this philosophy in action, often best illustrated in Canine Good Citizen classes. Dogs frequently come into this class with unacceptable behaviors (like jumping or pulling) and owners are sometimes at their wit's end. Within a few short weeks, a transformation occurs. There is real communication between dog and owner: the dog is calmer, more responsive, with a much better idea of what he/she is being asked to do. The owner is also calmer and more confident, with a real understanding of how to speak in a language that the dog readily understands. And even those dogs who may not be "perfectly" behaved when they complete the class have made remarkable strides, while their owners are better equipped with the tools needed to carry on with training.
To watch an owner and their dog build a relationship bond based on mutual trust is a truly rewarding experience. It is my privilege to be able to share with others the things I have learned as a student, teacher, and competitor. And what fun to occasionally to witness dogs that I have taught in Puppy classes then go on in their training to become fellow competitors or team members!
Whether you have competition ambitions, or just want to have an all-around, well-behaved family pet, I commend you for taking responsibility for your canine companion, for being willing to commit your time and effort to achieve that special relationship with your dog. You and your dog will reap the benefits of your investment in training for years to come, and have some fun in the process!
